Part 1: Brief Project Description
Learning to have deep understandings of mathematical concepts and understanding how to apply them is usually the hardest aspect of math for students to master. So often students are content with just memorizing the procedural drill and kill math problems just so they can pass the test and move on. However when students don’t understand the the concepts and applications of math, they don’t see a purpose for learning the material nor do they understand how to apply the concepts to everyday settings. The concepts become meaningless and get mislabeled/misfiled in long term memory or get forgotten altogether. The concept is no longer available for the students to retrieve from their long term memories when it is needed.
By using Microsoft Surface Pro 4s in my classroom, my students will transform their stagnant mathematical mindsets and start to think like members of the mathematical community . Having access to the 2 in 1, laptop and tablet in one device, will allow my students to use a variety of collaborative applications/software, dynamic math software, and virtual manipulatives. Instead of reading about or listening to someone talk about mathematics, they will have the opportunity to explore, discover, and interpret the mathematics that occurs around them everyday. Students will demonstrate their new mindset as they converse with their group about patterns they see, build models to represent what is happening, and preserve as they solve problems. The Surface Pro 4s will provide my students with opportunities that I cannot currently create for them in my classroom.
